Blossom Bottle Holder: Free pattern

Updated: May 14

Now, I don't leave the house too often, but when I do, I like to take my emotional support water bottle with me.

We visited Edinburgh a couple of years ago and I made myself a basic granny stitch water bottle holder for the trip. It was so nice to have it to hand all the time, and not have to keep asking my husband to let me root around in his backpack because I simply must hydrate IMMEDIATELY.

I recently found a box of 50g cotton DK balls which I've had for so long, I think since around 2020. I used them for amigurumi at the time, but I don't make many toys these days, so I've decided to turn them all into water bottle holders.

I'm hoping each ball will make one holder so I'll end up with an army of bottle holders at the end of this. What will I do with them? Idk, that's future Lauren's problem and she's none of my business.

For now, we're starting with this one. The Blossom Bottle Holder. The simple stitch repeat and cute flower motif make it the perfect accessory for any outfit. Whether you're strolling the streets of Venice, or walking the dog in the woods. Either way, you'll be hydrated and happy.

Let's get going!

Notes.

As mentioned, I'm using cotton DK for my water bottle holder. I strongly suggest using 100% cotton or maybe a cotton blend to prevent your strap stretching waaaaay out.

I used one ball of Hobbii Rainbow 8/8 cotton in colour 65 which I think is discontinued, and a 4mm hook.

By the end of round 3 my circle measured 8cm across. If your circle is bigger, try a smaller hook or tighter tension. If your circle is smaller try a larger hook or looser tension.

Your starting chain 2 does not count as a stitch throughout, but all chains worked within rounds count as stitches.

Your holder is worked in joined, unturned rounds.

Make sure to work chains within rounds loosely, else your bottle might not fit.

Abbreviations:

This pattern is written in US crochet terminology.

ch: chain

dc: double crochet

dc2tog: double crochet 2 sts together (-1 st)

dc3tog: double crochet 3 sts together (-2 sts)

hdc: half double crochet

sc: single crochet

sk: skip

sp: space

ss: slip stitch

st(s): stitch(es)

[]: repeat instructions between [] as many times as stated

Pattern.

Rnd 1 (RS): ch3, 12dc in third ch from hook, ss to first st to join. 12 sts.

Rnd 2: ch2, [4dc in next st, sk 1 st] 6 times, join. 24 sts.

Rnd 3: ch2, [4dc, ch2] 6 times, join. 36 sts.

This is the size your water bottle holder will be. If you need it any larger, try starting again with a larger hook.

You won't be adding any further increases, so the sides of your holder will now start to form around the flat circle of the base.

Rnd 4: Repeat Rnd 3.

Rnd 5: ch2, [1dc, dc2tog, 1dc, ch1, 1sc in ch2 sp, ch1] 6 times, join. 36 sts.

Rnd 6: ch2, [dc3tog, ch2, 1sc in sc from previous rnd, ch2] 6 times, join. 36 sts.

Rnd 7: ch1, [1sc, ch2, 1sc in sc from previous rnd, ch2] 6 times, join. 36 sts.

Rnd 8: ch1, [1sc, ch5, sk 5 sts] 6 times, join. 36 sts.

Rnd 9: work 3 ss to take you to central ch of first ch5 from previous rnd, 1ch, [1sc, ch5, sk 5 sts] 6 times, join. 36 sts.

Remember to work these chains loosely!

Rnds 10-13: Repeat rnd 9.

If your water bottle isn't very tall, you can work less rnds here. Try it on your bottle as you go to see how it fits. Remember, once you add water the strap will pull the holder up over the bottle.

Rnd 14: ss to first ch5 sp, [6sc in ch5 sp, sk 1 st] 6 times, join. 36 sts.

Strap.

Row 1: ch1, 4hdc, turn.

Rows 2-120: Repeat row 1.

You can alter the length of your strap by working more or fewer rows here.

Final row: count 14 sts from final st of row 1 of your strap, work 1sc through each st from the final row of your strap and the next 4 sts of rnd 14 to join.

Fasten off.

Weave in your ends and you're done! You're ready to get out into the world (ew) and stay hydrated out there.
